Blanket
chest or blanket box are names generally given to practical bedroom chests that settlers in Upper Canada used for
storing woollens and linens. Standard dove-tailed pine construction was common throughout much of the 19th century.
Original
blanket boxes were often highly decorated with ornamental colouring, more so than any other type of antique furniture.
Blanket boxes were also often decorated on the inside, usually with wallpaper.
Eventually blanket boxes with drawers in the base began to appear in Upper Canada. This represented the first step in the evolution toward bedroom chests of drawers, although blanket boxes, both with and without drawers, continued to be popular alongside larger chests.
Lattimor House blanket boxes come with or without drawers, with either a pedestal base or scrolled braket base style. Corner joints are dovetailed, and a plain or decorated interior is available. Our reproduction blanket box provides useful upper hallway or bedroom storage.
