Hanging Cupboard

Product Description

Hanging Cupboard

The hanging or wall cupboard was popular in Upper Canada in the early 19th century. The limited space in the all-purpose kitchen of the British-style cottage gave rise to a number of small and medium-sized wall-mounted items. These items were usually made by the individual settler himself, rather than a craftsman, and so were often simple in design. The wall cupboard was located close to the hearth, because it was often used to store small amounts of dry ingredients used in cooking.

In the German tradition, the centre of family life was often a separate room, where hanging cupboards were also used for storing small items. Eventually hanging cupboards and hanging dish racks evolved into more elaborate dish dressers and glazed-door cupboards.

The Lattimor House hanging cupboard comes in both single and double door versions with either blind or glazed doors. We also offer a hanging corner cupboard with either a blind or glazed door. In modern homes the hanging cupboard is useful both in the bathroom and kitchen for storage of small items.
